All I do know is that the oldest know use of the name for my pie shaped, doughy goodness, smothered in cheese and sauce, was recorded in a Latin text from 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy. The text states that a tenant of certain property must give the bishop of Gaeta 12 of me every Christmas Day and 12 more every Easter Sunday.
